MOFFAT 6 STRATHCLYDE POLICE 19

It would not be wrong to say that all associated with the rams expected a result this week against their old foes from Pitt Street, however it was not to be. Moffat started with a change in front row, which saw the return of Cammy Little partnering his brother Jonathan at prop. Sandwiched between the not so little Littles was the ever present Scot Galloway at hooker. In the second Row Captain Jamie Mcdowall continued his partnership with Bob Drennan, with the usual breakaway outfit of Polly Smith, Kenny Carter and Matt Wennington, making up the forward contingent. Gordon Dinwoodie continued at scrum half, whilst an injury to Mike Lockhart meant that Ben Hawthorn made his first league start of the season at stand off. Clint Smith and Kevin jack in the centre were supported by a back three of Calum Jardine, Dave Scott and Graeme Gemmell. Replacements for the day were Scot Borthwick, Trevor Newport and Al Rant.

The rams started very strongly, with some fine interplay between backs and forwards. Ben Hawthorn at Stand off made some mature decisions, which kept the Police on the back foot for this period of play. The contest was fairly even with no quarter being asked for or given. The Moffat scrum was secure and Scot Galloway was able to take “one against the head\”. The lineout started well, however a large percentage of ball was lost in this aspect of the game. Moffat took the lead thanks to a Kevin Jack penalty before things started to go wrong for the rams.  Graeme Gemmell caught a high tackle that resulted him leaving the pitch with a broken nose. He was replaced by Trevor Newport who went on the wing with Dave Scott moving to full back. Then a moment of madness by a Moffat Player, who had kicked out at one of the opposition resulted in the Police feeling rightfully aggrieved at his actions and seemed to give them more focus. As the half time whistle sounded The Police licked their wounds and came out for the second half with a determination they had not had earlier in the game. Strathclyde soon scored a couple of tries early in the half, with Moffat only managing one more Kevin Jack penalty. The score remained at 12 – 6 until the final quarter. Scot borthwick replaced Jonathan Little at Prop and Dave Scott had to leave the field because of an eye problem. Zola moved to full back and was replaced by Al Rant at Scrum half. Despite Moffats sterling efforts Strathclyde scored one more try before the end to win the game 19 – 6. Positives for this game were the improved scrummage and the way in which Moffat mixed up the game in the first half. The tackling as usual was top drawer. The negatives were slow ball through the backs, poor decision making after a good start and some poor discipline. Following the match most made their way to The Buccleuch Arms Hotel for the Moffat RFC Annual Dinner. The speaker for the evening was ex referee and President of The SRU Alan Hosie. A great night was had by all. Special thanks to Martyn Hawthorn for organising the event and Dave Smith and the team at The Buccleuch. On the night Martin Coombes was presented with an honorary Life membership for his dedicated work with the junior section.

This week the rams are away to GHK. Team to meet at The Buccleuch at 11.00am
